About Shelby Housing Authority

The Housing Department consists of 172 apartments ranging from 1 to 5 bedroom sizes. Rent is based on income, which also includes utilities, with tenants paying excess for going over the allotted amount for utilities. Apartments usually stay filled at all times and when an apartment becomes vacant, an applicant is chosen from a waiting list. We choose an application by bedroom size, income range, back ground rental checks, and criminal record checks. Depending on the criteria needed, it may take anywhere from 6 months up until 2 years to obtain an apartment. Applications are taken four times a year as needed. All applications must be taken at the office. There are no on line applications available. Applicants must be 18 years and over. In addition to providing housing, the department also offers training assistance for residents in such areas as budgeting, life skills, education, job searching, and preparation for homeownership.

Mission Statement

The Housing Department is responsible for providing safe and sanitary housing for low to moderate income families, including the elderly and handicapped.
